Hebrews 1:7 |

14 |
Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. |
Matthew 22:30 |
For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. |
Job 1:6 |
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. |
Their names often end in 'el' (meaning 'of El' or 'of God'), e.g. Michael, Gabriel. The Talmud adds: Raphael, Uriel, Chamuel, Jophiel and Zadkiel. These seven archangels are the messengers (maliks) of Yahweh the Almighty God of Israel.
Jude 9 |
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, 'the Lord rebuke thee.' |
1 Thessalonians 4:16 |
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first. |
The Devil is a fallen archangel. The basic word devil ('diabolus') means to wilfully misrepresent, to present as blameable, to traduce. At some date in the past the Devil led a rebellion against the Almighty and a third of the angels joined in his revolt.
Revelation 12:7 |
And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8. And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. |
The Devil had hopes of taking over the government of the entire universe: to sit on the very throne of God. This, almost incredible, plan is described in the following passage where the Devil is represented as the King of Tyre, the capital city of Phoenicia where trade and commerce had its birth.
Ezekiel 28:12 |
12: Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13: Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. |
The Devil's revolution is about to come to its end: for he and his followers are to be burned to ashes in the lake of fire. Many evil angels are already held in darkness awaiting their Day of Judgement.
Jude 6 |
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. |
2 Peter 2:4 |
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment |
Revelation 20:7 |
7: And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8: And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9: And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. |

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. 8: O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. |
